Center for Digital Learning Moves to USM’s Lewiston-Auburn College
Lewiston, ME - 4/9/10 by Dan Philbrick Ribbon Cutting held with Former Governor Angus King and USM President Selma Botman
The Maine International Center for Digital Learning (MICDL), the non-profit founded by former Maine Governor Angus King to support teaching and learning practices that often involve the use of digital media, is moving to USM's Lewiston-Auburn College under an agreement signed on April 7.
King, USM President Selma Botman, USM Lewiston-Auburn College Dean Joyce Gibson and others signed the agreement during a ribbon-cutting ceremony held at USM’s Lewiston-Auburn College. President Botman thanked King and the Center staff and volunteers "for your inspirational work in ensuring that the wonders of technology are harnessed in support of teachers and students."
With the signing, MICDL will move from its current location on USM's Portland campus to Lewiston. USM's Lewiston-Auburn College has a long-standing working relationship with K-12 schools in the region, and is the home of College for Me-Androscoggin, a community-wide collaborative working to double the number of college-educated citizens in Androscoggin County.
A goal of the Center is to advance "...how technology can be utilized most effectively to transform education,” said King at the ceremony. “This is urgent work." The move to Lewiston-Auburn College, added King, will allow the Center to focus on what he called "the four P's." They include a plan to significantly increase outreach to education in this region, a partnership with local schools and community organizations. "The fourth," he said, "is passion because you have to care. That informs everything else."
The move allows MICDL to become an active partner in providing enhanced educational and professional development opportunities for teachers, students and adult learners in south-central Maine, which in turn promises to support success in post secondary education. In particular, the Center plans to build on the community partnerships and create a parallel network of middle and high schools in the area that is focused on the use of technology and digital resources in teaching and learning.
MICDL was founded in 2008 by former Maine Governor Angus S. King Jr., who initiated Maine’s 1-to-1 laptop program, and Bette Manchester, director of that program for its first seven years. The state laptop program, officially known as the Maine Learning Technology Initiative (MLTI), began in 2001. By the 2009-2010 school year, the MLTI program was providing 1-to-1 laptops to all seventh and eighth grade students, and more than 50 percent of the high schools. In addition, several Maine high schools have 1-to-1 computing programs outside of the MLTI program.
One of three campuses of the University of Southern Maine, USM LAC plays an especially distinctive role in addressing the higher education needs of Androscoggin County through its broad-based interdisciplinary bachelor and graduate degree programs, which feature a nationally-recognized core curriculum, face-to-face and online courses, internships, research and community service projects, and study abroad opportunities.
